I notice a rather intriguing coincidence about Royal events affecting Assembly elections. This year the Royal Story that threatens to overshadow coverage of the election is the April Wedding of Wills and Kate. In April 2007 the Royal story that knocked the election off the front page of the Western Mail was Wills and Kate splitting up.
See what a difference that just one term of a Plaid lead one Wales Government can achieve! Love restored, harmony and reconciliation abound and a happy ending to a Fairy story.
This reconciliation was, of course, one of Plaid's main manifesto policies in 2007 (see page 244) and proves what a Plaid driven Welsh Government can achieve; which is why Plaid is fighting the next Assembly Election under the slogan We are the best lap dogs for Labour.
Interesting that unlike Alex Salmond, Ieuan never gets on UK radio or tv or press to say his view on anything.
ReplyDeleteHe's managed to make himself invisible. He's the Deputy First Minister of Wales - a post which gives the holder ample opportunity to raise his/her profile and kite-fly ideas - but has decided to avoid publicity. This is much to the detriment of himself and Plaid ... and then Plaid don't understand why it's stuck on 21% for the next Assembly elections!
But surely, the old Fart has identified a clear election winning strategy - claim credit for fixing the royal wedding! Nobody who knows anything about it will believe it, (it might raise a smile) but the Daily Mail and Express readers might be persuaded! Beautiful! Mandelsonian, even.
ReplyDeleteand of course its all down to their move to Anglesey Dwynwen works her magic
ReplyDeleteWasn't Ieuan once a solicitor, as was his sidekick, Elfyn Llwyd (who's actually a barrister)? Money for nothing seems to capture both posts.
ReplyDeleteIeuan is still a solicitor, Elfyn was once a solicitor but is now (still) a barrister. I would hate to live in your idyll where such people didn't exist, a completely lawless society!
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Plaid will need to demonstrate thatn its AMs can be "the best lap dogs for Labour." It seems to me that Labour is on target for an overall majority (even if a small one) in May. On Saturday I saw Labour canvassers out in Conwy, and yesterday they were out in force in Llandudno Junction. The line from an old hymn "like a mighty army" comes to mind. I've not seen a single Plaid canvasser or poster so far in the llandudno - Conwy area. I think that Plaid will be back in opposition, which it is rather good at and seems to be its destiny.
ReplyDeleteAs much as it pains me to admit, as a Welsh Labour supporter, Plaid have been good in government. Moreoever it would be better for Labour to have a coalition with Plaid, than an outright majority. Any majority would likely to be slim, and would mean that a Labour AM or two being absent for anyreason, or defecting, would leave Labour in open to loosing votes, and scrammbling amongst the opposition parties for deals to survive.
ReplyDeleteThat said, Plaid have not ruled out working with the ConDems, but hopefully it be a fourth term Labour-led govt.
