Arise Sir Alwyn, Knight of St David

I must apologise for the petulant nature of some of my recent posts. I have been rather depressed since New Year. I was sure that Her Majesty would have recognised the huge contribution that I have made to Welsh society in the New Year's Honours list, by being given a gong. I can't understand why I was overlooked again this year!

I am feeling better now, because one of the things that Plaid has gained from its alliance with the Labour Party may be a new Order of Welsh Merit.

Come March next year, I strongly suspect that I might be a Knight of the Order of St David!

  1. I'm all for this. I hope it will be a well designed medal with a distinguished ceremony and even tea-party at the Senedd or even Cardiff or Caernarfon Castle as some AM suggested and that it is something people will be proud of. Maybe even Rhodri Morgan will show some respect to the dignity of the occasion and the Welsh national community get a haircut and new suit for the day. It should be one of the highlights of the Welsh calendar.

This is a good development, it shows Plaid and Wales are moving away from the tired 'egalitarian' (i.e. Wales is a dull place where we can't have any colour nor pageant) ideology and bring back a bit af dignity and colour to being Welsh.

At last, Wales is embracing good Gaullist initiative in touch with majority, main-stream Welsh sentiment.

If the English can have their medals and ceremonies, why not the Welsh?

  3. Worst economy in the UK, schools closing, hospitals failing, council tax rising... and the Labour-Plaid Government wants to give a few medals out to its chums - say no more.

  4. Heaven forbid that Wales too will be turned into a fake meritocracy!
Those to whom honours are conferred are high in the popularity stakes, but often low on actual true merit.

  5. Alan, what a rude person you are!

Are you really suggesting that my MERIT is fake?

  6. Not intended as a personal remark Alwyn, and you haven't get received the honour anyway, but a general observation only.
And by the way anon: egalitarian doesn't have to mean lack of colour or pageant. It just means people should be treated equally, without fear or favour.

    All true Felicity, all true.

But I don't remember seeing a post on your blogs saying the same thing about my friend Liz doling out gongs to all and sundry when things are spiraling downwards in the English economy!

    Love the idea though.

If everything that Westminster does, re hospital, housing and schooling isn't up to scratch by next November Liz says NO HONOURS THIS NEW YEAR.

It would be something to keep the gong hoe buggerson their toes!
