Alun Cairns has just asked Rhodri Morgan what plans the Assembly Government has to celebrate Prince Charles' 50th anniversary as Prince of Wales. As the investiture was in 1969 the 50th anniversary will be in 2019, so either Alun wants us to spend 12 years in preparation, or he has asked his question 10 years too early.
Although Charles was invested in 1969, he was "named" Prince of Wales during the Empire Games in 1958 - this is what Alun wants to cellebrate. So he has got his dates right even if his priorities are wrong.
ReplyDeleteI think the real question is, why should we celebrate Charles as Prince Of Wales? Fo a number of reasons, I don't believe we should.

ReplyDeleteGeraint: I think the real question is, why should we celebrate Charles as Prince Of Wales?
ReplyDeleteAlun said in his question that the event should be celebrated because of the enormous contribution Charles has made and because he is an unifying influence.
Personally I am not aware of Charles' huge contribution. Others have contributed more than him but without the same level of sycophantic praise. As to being an unifying influence I can't think of a period when divisions in Wales were more bitter than the period surrounding the investiture.
Mr Cairns isn't the only one excited at the prospect
ReplyDeleteThis idea is even more stupid than Britain Day.
